June is the month to license your pooch!

State law mandates that all dogs over six months of age must be licensed in the town in which they reside and must wear the tag on a collar around their neck.

Dogs over six months of age are licensed every year in the month of June, and the license covers the period from July 1st through June 30th of the following year.  Dogs that reach six months at any other time of the year should be licensed at that time they reach six months.  Dogs acquired at any other time of the year that are over six months should be licensed within thirty days.

The Town Clerk’s office handles dog licenses.  You must produce a current RABIES VACCINATION CERTIFICATE (not the tag) at the time you purchase your license.  If your dog’s vaccine is good for three years you need only produce a new certificate when the vaccine is boostered.

Also, if your dog is spayed or neutered, bring along that certificate as well…or check your rabies certificate, it might state that your dog is a “NM” (neutered male) or “FS” (female spayed).  Sterilized animals are cheaper to license!

Current fees are $19.00 per intact dog and $8.00 for a sterilized animal.

You can also license your dog by mail if it is impossible to get to the town hall during business hours.  Send your current rabies certificate (if necessary), your neuter/spay certificate (if applicable) along with a check and a self addressed, stamped envelope.  Any paperwork you send in will be returned with your license.

Please note that if you purchase your license late (anytime after June 30th) you will be charged a $1.00 late fee for every month beginning in July.  If you are registering your 6 month old dog for the first time or a new dog this does not apply.

If you move from another town to Glastonbury the license from the previous town can be transferred to Glastonbury for a small fee.  Also, if you acquire a dog that is already licensed you may transfer that license to your name for a small fee.

Violation of the licensing law carries a fine of $75.00.

There are numerous other reasons for licensing your dog!  If your dog wanders from home he/she is immediately identifiable through the license and can be returned to you.  At the very least you could be contacted and advised your dog was safe at the pound.

In the event of a human medical emergency responding personnel would know how many dogs you have and what their names were.  Same goes for the fire department.

If your dog is found injured we have the opportunity to call you so you can make any life/death decisions.  Valuable time can be lost trying to locate owners.
